Fab Lab BCN: Technology and manufacturing for all citizens to become makers in order to create any kind of idea with different materials through digital fabrication.

The City Hall of Barcelona visited the Fab Lab BCN, ??located within the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC), in order to share and learn more about the activities and projects that we develop and manufacture related to any digital process.

02The Fab Lab’s main goal is to follow the “smart city” concept; make life easier for citizens. This process is happening now with an academic relationship formed between Fab Lab BCN and IaaC. The interaction between the two institutions culminate with the master in Advanced Architecture, where the student can learn how to apply the digital fabrication techniques into the field of Architecture. In addition, students experience the relavance of working interdisciplinary with professional fields such as electronics, permaculture, robotics etc.

03“That allows us to realize our first idea until the final design, a single person with the Fab Lab team can help with the whole process. For a designer, it is invaluable to be emersed in the project from beginning to the end,” says the manager of Fab Lab Barcelona, Luciano Betoldi.

04Robert Garita, one of the MAA 2012-13 students and Professor of Architecture at the Veritas University in Robert Garita, one of the graduates of the MAA 2012-13 program and now a Professor of Architecture at the Veritas University in Costa Rica is currently working in the Fab Lab BCN as an intern through a full academic scholarship that he got, with the idea to learn about the entire Fab Lab concept and the Digital Fabrication knowledge. The idea behind Garita’s work is to go back to his country in order to implement all the knowledge and technology learned to run a Fab Lab in Costa Rica.
