Fab Academy week 9 : cast your own gourmet chocolate, cable holders and much more

This past week our students have been busy with the Molding and Casting assignment. Lots of beautiful little objects were produced and lots of sticky, liquid, chewy, blubby materials were stirred and cured.

I can’t avoid giving some examples of the messiness of this process (we even have DIY compressors to get ridd of bubbles that get trapped in the molding material while stirring to make sure our molds are FABulous) …

In our lab we mainly used machinable wax to prepare our positive molds, then silicones to prepare our negative molds, some foodsafe to make yummy fancy chocolate, and some not to make all sorts of other objects.

We learnt that to cast silicone in silicone molds you need a demolding agent..

Which is not exactly funny since most of these materials take 24 hours to cure…. But hey, you learn to be patient and wait. Check Jani‘s and Theò‘s page for the successful experiments.

Alessandra casted her lips and scanned the result with the Roland Modela, to then make a mold for chocolate. Check her page!
